Why an IT Company Builds Prosthetics
The FidoHand is a 3D printed prosthetic hand. Fido Systems embarked on building the FidoHand as a side project. Because we are an out-sourced IT company, we are always tracking new technologies. 3D printing is one of the most intriguing and transformative technologies of recent memory. When we saw a video of a child receiving a 3D printed hand, we were moved. As a means of investigating the new technology and giving something back to the community, we found the notion of making hands for children in the San Francisco Bay Area irresistible.
So we embarked on FidoHand. At first we were simply printing existing hand designs. But we quickly realized the existing designs were far from optimal. Soon our goals expanded to improving the design, and ultimately to solving the biggest problem with all prostheses in general:
The degree of customization necessary to make a prosthesis fit properly and proportionally leads to extensive manual custom work. Customization leads to high costs, long lead times, and the need for a one-to-one relationship between the prosthesis maker and the recipient.
We wanted to make something much more accessible. So we spend a year redesigning and refining the FidoHand until we had the problem licked.
The FidoHand is mechanical, requiring the user to have a functional wrist. Flexing the wrist makes FidoHand's prosthetic fingers grip. FidoHand is particularly well suited to people who lack fingers either due to congenital issues or resulting from an accident. Its low cost and custom sizing makes its especially attractive for children. Most other prosthesis are prohibitively expensive. Because children are constantly growing, expensive prostheses can not fit them long enough to merit the investment. But FidoHand's low cost, custom sizing, and quick build time make it ideal for growing children, and for adults as well.
Soon, FidoHands will be available online, custom printed and sized to order, and shipped within a week. Once received it can be fitted by the recipient in their home. To find out more about the FidoHand, please visit FidoHand.com
